MUD

de*cay, de*kay, vi,[from Decadence, < L. de, from, and cadere, to fall.] 1. to lose strength, prosperity, etc. gradually; deteriorate 2. to rot 3. to undergo radioactive disintegration --vt to cause to decay --n 1. deterioration 2. a rotting or rottenness

Decay is a Dark Humor / Horror themed MUD, currently in alpha running off a heavily modified Circle 3 codebase. Decay has been online sporadically since January of 1998, and is currently running on a shared Sparc 10, connected to the 'net via T-1.

The world of Decay is currently "paused" at a very precise moment - 9 am Eastern time, Sunday, July 22, 1945. The Manhattan Project has created an atomic weapon, but many are reluctant to use it. For this and other reasons, the U.S. Government is exploring an alternative, the Philadelphia Project. Charles Babbage, Mary Shelley, Nikola Tesla, Vodun necromancers, electrical fields, excessive violence and more all combine to open the doors between the lands of the living and the lands of the dead.

The dkMUD is not intended to be a deep, introspective look at the human condition, nor is it intended to be a haven for intellectual role-players. The dkMUD is intended to be a place for non-stop hack-and-slashing in an alternate world where the undead roam the earth and battle for dominance. While the actual Decay universe has a multi-layered background, history and timeline, dkMUD is set in a specific moment in that history when killing and slaying of everything that moves is the main reason for being. Everything is a weapon, everyone is an enemy, and every tick of the clock brings your body one step closer to decay.

If you're looking for a mud that emphasizes role-playing, technological marvels, clever puzzle-solving and career opportunity, try iconoclast.org 7777. But if you're looking to bash in some skulls and drink some blood, check out decay. (When we have it up, of course).
